The three main things that you need to do to winterize your roof are:

  • Clear debris
  • Check pipe boots and flashing
  • Clean gutters
Clear Debris

If you have a few stray sticks or leaves on your roof, you probably don’t think much about it. However, what may seem like harmless debris could turn into a big problem if you don’t take care of cleaning off your roof. If leaves and other organic debris are allowed to decay on your roof, it could start to cause issues. Loose sticks or low-hanging branches can also start to scrape away the protective layers on your shingles, so it’s very important to remove all the debris from your roof to make sure it can keep doing its job of keeping moisture out of your home.

Check Pipe Boots And Flashing

Some of the areas that are most prone to leaks or damage are the areas where the shingles meet with pipes, chimneys, or other items on the roof. These areas are protected by materials called pipe boots and flashing. Be sure to check that these spots aren’t damaged or missing, because if moisture starts to leak into the attic due to damaged flashing, it can start to cause structural damage. Replacing pipe boots or flashing is relatively inexpensive, but when left unchecked it can quickly lead to large, expensive repairs.

Clean Gutters

Much like your roof, if you have too much debris in your gutters, it can lead to issues down the road. Overflowing gutters aren’t just an annoyance — they are a danger! The moisture flowing out of the gutters can easily get stuck under shingles, causing mold and rot on your roof. In the winter this is especially dangerous as the water can freeze, causing ice dams which are very dangerous to roofing materials and gutters alike, leading to expensive repairs and replacements.
